Sales of Google Android phones soar 350% in first three months of 2010
News

Sales of Google’s Android-based phones have sky-rocketed in the UK over the past three months according to new figures.

Research published by German-based GfK Retail and Technology has revealed that Android operated phones now cover a 13 per cent share of the UK’s smartphone contract sales compared with a mere three per cent at the start of the year.

The surge has accompanied a general rise in the uptake of smartphones as customers reach the end of their old mobile contracts.

Google Android runs on an open-source, Linux-based system and many of the phones which use the operating system have been lauded by critics.

Now the critical acclaim seems to be gaining traction with the general public as more mobile phone manufacturers begin to make inroads on Apple's dominance in the market.

'The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name,' commented GfK analyst Megan Baldock.

'Operating Systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right.'

GfK Retail and Technology's latest figures have revealed that between Q1 and Q2 of this year contract market sales grew by less than 1 per cent, sales of Android phones increased by a staggering 350 per cent.
